Handgun Safety Training: Essential Tips for New Shooters

At Element Training Complex, we believe safe and effective handgun use starts with mastering the fundamentals. Whether you’re brand-new to firearms or brushing up on your skills, proper grip, trigger control, and stance are key to accurate shooting and safe handling.

Below, our instructors, Deon Walker, Julian, and Steve, share foundational handgun safety training tips for beginners.

  1. Mastering the Proper Handgun Grip

Instructor: Deon Walker

The right grip ensures better control, accuracy, and safety. Here’s how to get it right:

• Firing Hand: Position your hand high on the tang of the gun. Keep your fingers snug against the bottom of the trigger guard.

• Support Hand: Imagine reaching to shake someone’s hand. Lay your thumb along the frame (not the slide) and wrap your fingers around your firing hand.

• Grip Pressure: Hold the gun firmly with your firing hand to maintain trigger control, then add strong, steady pressure with your support hand.

A secure, consistent grip minimizes recoil and improves shot placement which is critical for safe and effective handgun handling.

  1. Trigger Control for Accurate Shooting

Instructor: Julian

Trigger control is one of the most important handgun safety training fundamentals. Poor technique can throw your shots off target.

• Finger Placement: Use the pad of your index finger, placing it gently on the trigger.

• Smooth Pull: Pull the trigger straight back to the rear without moving the gun left or right.

• Find the “Wall”: As you pull, you’ll feel a point of resistance — that’s the “wall.” Pause there to finalize your aim, then press through smoothly to fire.

Proper trigger control keeps your sight picture steady and helps ensure your shots land exactly where you intend.

  1. Building a Stable Shooting Stance

Instructor: Steve

A stable stance is your foundation for safe, accurate shooting. Without it, recoil management and precision become difficult.

• Feet Position: Stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width for side-to-side stability.

• Front-to-Back Balance: Stagger your stance by bringing your support-side foot slightly forward.

• Avoid Overcomplication: You don’t need an aggressive or exaggerated posture, just a natural, balanced position that allows you to stay steady while aiming.

A proper stance gives you the stability to manage recoil effectively and stay on target.
